Petition to Change Registration (11.2.10-12.13.10)

Use this form from the 46th day  of instruction to the Friday before finals (December 13th, 2010 @ 4:30pm) to A) add courses or change sections, B) change grade options, C) variable credits and sections, or to D) drop courses. This form can be picked up at the Registration Counter in Griz Central or in the plastic form holders located at the entries to Griz Central.

Petition to Change Registration After the 30th Day of Instruction

A) Adding a Course:
You must have both your instructor and advisor approve the change by signing this form. Once you have the appropriate signatures, turn the form into the Registration Counter in Griz Central. There will be a $10 fee.   All students are advised to keep the notarized carbon copy until they have received their grades for the semester.

Changing Sections:
Both instructors signatures are required to change sections. Advisor signature is not required.

B & C) Changing Grading Options:
Both instructor and advisor signatures are required. This option is for students who wish to change variable credit or Traditional/Credit-No Credit options.

D) Dropping a Course:
You must have your instructor, advisor and dean of your major approve the drop by signing this form. Once you have the appropriate signatures, turn the form into the Registration Counter in Griz Central. There will be a $10 fee.  The grade for the dropped class will either be a “WP” for “Withdrawal While Passing” or a “WF” for “Withdrawal While Failing.”  Students receiving financial aid who will drop under 12 credits should speak with the Financial Aid Counter in Griz Central before dropping the class. All students are advised to keep the notarized carbon copy until they have received their grades for the semester.

You must have the instructor’s signatures before asking for your advisor’s signature. If you do not know who your advisor is, click here.

Once all signatures are acquired, turn the completed form into the Registration Counter in Griz Central.

GEAR Online Email from UM to Students

Hello from The University of Montana,

Thank you for registering for the General Education, Advising and Registration (GEAR) Online Program. GEAR Online allows you to complete your autumn course registration before attending Fall Orientation on August 25th and 26th. At Fall Orientation you’ll have the opportunity to meet with your advisor and learn about all the special programs at UM.

In order to keep things easy, we’ve posted all of the information you need to complete your autumn registration to one web site devoted just to our GEAR Online students.  There you’ll find step-by-step instructions and informative videos (watch them!) to walk you through the course selection and your registration process.  We also give you the contact information for staff available to answer questions.

It’s time to get started on the Advising and Registration process! Be sure to have on hand your 790- Student Identification Number, and your Net ID and password. In addition, you’ll need your Advising Number, which is #advising_pin#. Please do not lose this advising number-you will need it each time you try to adjust your schedule for the Autumn Semester.

  • First initial, last initial and random assortment of 6 digits (e.g. Monte Bear=mb123456)
  • Use to log into student email account, OneStop, Academic Course Planner
  • Initial password is last six digits of Student ID Number
  • Contact Information Technology (IT) office with password problems: (406) 243-HELP (4351), 8:00am-5:00pm MST Monday-Friday

Advising Number

  • Listed above. Traditionally given to you by your advisor during advising appointments that occur every semester.
  • This number changes each semester

Advising 2.0: Utilizing Web 2.0 Resources in Academic Advising

The emergence and growth of Web 2.0 software has introduced various new methods for communication in academic advising. The days when communication technology tools were limited to the telephone and email are over as various campus departments experiment with Web 2.0 communication tools to supplement the more traditional means of reaching students. This article describes the basics of some of the more popular Web 2.0 software, discusses how academic advising efforts can be complemented by Web 2.0 tools, and offers suggestions on how to best implement Web 2.0 resources through effective campus collaborations.

Drop/Add Form (Use from 2.14.11 through 3.28.11)

Use this form from the 16th through the 45th day  of instruction (March 28th @ 4:30pm) to A) drop courses, B) add courses, C) change grade options, D) variable credits and sections. This form can be picked up at the Registration Counter in Griz Central or in the plastic form holders located at the entries to Griz Central.

Drop/Add Form

A&B) Dropping or Adding a Course:
You must have both your instructor and advisor approve the change by signing this form. Once you have the appropriate signatures, turn the form into the Registration Counter in Griz Central. There will be a $10 fee and the class will show as a “W” on the transcript. Students receiving financial aid who will drop under 12 credits should speak with the Financial Aid Counter in Griz Central before dropping the class or run the Satisfactory Academic Progress calculator in Cyberbear (Student Services & Financial Aid > Financial Aid > My Eligibility > Predict My SAP). All students are advised to keep the notarized carbon copy until they have received their grades for the semester.

New Spring 2009 Course in African American Studies

AAS/HIST 395: The African American Religious Experience, MWF 3:10 – 4:00, CRN 34877

Students examine Christianity, Islam, Santeria, and voodoo within the African-American community from the colonial era through the twentieth century. No prerequisites required – this is a great class for upper-division elective credit or toward the new African American Studies minor.
