Writing Center

The Writing Center exists to help students become more effective writers as they progress through college.  Welcoming all students, including international students, we provide a comfortable environment where writers engage in supportive conversations about their writing and where writers can receive feedback on their works in progress.  Our professional tutors help writers at any point during a writing process and with any writing task. Focused on the development of the writer, tutors help students to recognize their power as communicators and to practice strategies that will help them write more effectively.

They offer students:

  • FREE one-to-one writing tutoring (available on a by-appointment and drop-in basis);
  • Guidance interpreting writing assignments;
  • Reader feedback on any writing task, including research proposals and papers, response papers, reports, literature reviews, speeches, scholarship applications, graduate school            applications, thesis projects, etc.;
  • Help developing strategies for revision at any stage of a writing process;
  • Workshops on specific types of writing and on the various parts of a writing process;
  • Assistance building strategies for timed writing situations.

To make an appointment, stop by LA 144, call 243-2266, or visit their web-based scheduler at http://www.umt.edu/writingcenter/. Appointments are recommended; however, drop-in tutoring is available during designated Mansfield Library and all Study Jam hours.

The Writing Center also helps students prepare for the Upper-division Writing Proficiency Assessment, a timed writing exam all students must attempt when they have completed between 45 and 70 credits.  For more information, visit UM’s UDWPA website at www.umt.edu/udwpa.
