Re:       Status Update on Freshman Pre-Registration

Date:   June 1, 2010

On Monday, June 7th, The University will begin pre-registering new freshmen into the core courses identified by departments for their majors. This process is expected to take the entire week of June 7th. During that week the Fall Registration window in CyberBear will be closed to all but these entering students.

Before freshmen can be registered in their appropriate core course groups, departments are being asked to review each of their students’ Academic Interest Questionnaires (A-IQ) and placement test results and select the appropriate Core Courses Group for that student.  Originally, we planned to deliver the students’ A-IQ /Placement Scores packets directly to each academic department.  However, an internal error in the survey software resulted in a one-week delay in assembling the A-IQ packets for each student.

With the loss of a week in the schedule, we think it would be more prudent to keep all 1,800 freshmen A-IQ/Placement Scores packets in one location (the Office for Student Success) and instead ask departments to send a faculty member or advisor to the OSS to designate the core course groups for each of their majors. The packets will be available from Wednesday through Friday this week (June 2, 3, & 4) during the OSS daily hours of operation (8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Suite 269, Lommasson Center).  Someone from the OSS or the Undergraduate Advising Center will be on site at all times to answer any questions that an advisor or faculty member may have.

Because academic departments created the core course groups for their majors, it is best that the core course group assignment for new majors be carried out by a departmental representative. If, however, it is not possible for a department to send a representative to make the core course assignments given the compressed time schedule, please notify Sharon O’Hare at the OSS immediately upon receipt of this notice (, 243-5672). Core Courses Group assignments for these departments’ majors will be made by other professional advisors after they review each student’s A-IQ/Placement Scores packets.

Please contact Arlene Walker-Andrews ( or Sharon O’Hare ( if you have any questions.
